The Empire Mine location was discovered in 1850 by George Roberts, while he surveyed local timber for lumbering. He happened to peer down at his boots and was surprised to find they were covered with tiny gold flakes. Believing the land held little gold and was too hard to mine, George sold the land and rights for only $350. Within 13 years of this sale over a million dollars in gold was brought to the surface.

The Empire Mine was one of the first - and eventually the largest and most productive – of the hard-rock mining operations in California . Some 5.8 million ounces (32,000 tons) were eventually extracted from the vein during it's more than 100 year life, ending in 1956 when the cost to run the operation exceeded the value of the gold produced. Today the Empire Mine still hoards its treasure as geologists estimate that only 20% of the gold has been removed from the mine.

The Mine Shaft Building continues to be the gateway to an unbelievable 367 miles of tunnels and mining caves. If spanned end to end as a single tunnel, it would reach from Grass Valley to Los Angeles . The entrance to the mine extends down an 11,000 foot incline to the main shafts a mile below the surface.
